SO IT'S BEEN A WHILE...

I have been working and finishing school and moving. I am still living out of a Speedo dufflebag. Unfortunately, I have not drawn much. A few monsters, some doodles from astronomy (last course ever), some naked chicks. My parents are moved back to the east coast after 11 odd years. Sometimes I miss it, then I realize it's 68 degrees in November and the longing is gone.

ASESSMENT OF LAST FEW MONTHS: Guys are creepy. Girls are apeshit crazy.
OMFG HARRY POTTER. Apparently I am the only one who enjoyed the epilouge. You guys are all drama queens. I thought it was cute. Lol Hedwig is a nag.
No, I didn't go to comic con because I was moving the exact same time. I sent Erik money to pick me up some things. Like anything on Golden Compass, Abe Sapien, and an exclusive Harry.
I hate having stuff.
I hate dating. No, I do not follow the third-date-rule.
I have too many clothes. And no where near enough.
I cannot wear a dress 3 times apparently.
I have a strangely liberating apathy towards shitty friends.
I am going to be horribly broke soon.
I miss my cat, my second best friend. I want a cute Corgi puppy from the local pet store. He hugs you. But he is 14 hundred dollars.

I think I'll rant.

So I'm out of school and looking for a job and moving. Sort of what started my downward spiral was the release of Spider-man 3. No, I haven't seen it. I didn't really want to, even last year and the year before I didn't want to. "It's got Venom!"
"Awesome!"
"Played by Topher Grace!"
"Not so awesome."
"It's got Sandman!"
"Oh. Doesn't it still have to deal with the whole Green Goblin arc?"
"It's got Gwen Stacy!"
"Wait..."
"It's got more Mary Jane!"
"'kay."
"Venom appears and dies in the last 15 minutes!"
"I think I'll go see Transformers. At least it has giant robots."

Entertainment and film is one of the biggest businesses in the world, up with defense and stocks and food. This industry moves hundreds of millions and billions of dollars now a days. The biggest box office movers that everyone wants their hands on, from actors to soda marketers, is animated and fantasy films. Star Wars, Pirates, Lord of the Rings, Sherk, Pixar films, Harry fucking Potter, and the climbing numbers of comic films, these are the ones everyone is spending money on. From your brainless drug-addled teen to the overworked mom taking kids to the movies for an afternoon, to stock brokers and hair dressers, everyone. People pay to see this when they have no idea what it's about. People are talking to me about how they want to see the new Fantastic Four and in the same sentence is "with this silver fucking guy that surfs through air!". "Yes, he comes before Galactus." "Galacwhat?"
This isn't about fandoms and prejudice against non-nerds or whatever. By all means, it's great to see comics and fantasy now relatively 'publicly acceptable' like some twisted Jehovah's Witness. I don't get weird looks if I wear a Spidey shirt or Superman earrings. Any teenager can drop 12 bucks on one at Anchor Blue now. I see gang bangers and cholos throughout various parts of L.A. wearing comic hero paraphanalia. I am assuming it is a statement of invincibility, but it's nonetheless mainstream now.

What this is about is that because of everyone wanting in on these cash cows, things that used to be brilliant and unique and character driven are getting beaten and mashed and crammed into boxes. Made bland, like Applebees is to a chef. Or by adding too much spice to something that tastes great as it is. To try and force them into making more money somehow, which haha usually seems to backfire. Let's hire some pretty face instead of a real actor, people like her/him. No one is going to take this seriously, let's make it hokey/even more hokey. Fuck it, let's just make the entire script jokes. And vice versa, this shit is serious, no jokes.

Occasionally someone can break free, or start off clean. I loved Spider-Man, I even really liked Spider-Man 2. Narnia was good for what it was. Don't ask my opinion on Lord of the Rings because you wouldn't like it. I loved the first Shrek, until the second one started to become what it was satiring. Pixar is so far one of the few who has been able to keep their own ground and at the same time appease the Disney Marketing Beureu. I'm hoping Golden Compass and Stardust will be added to the list, though both may be considered 'too strange' for the masses. I'm tired of seeing things close or important or just plain inspiring to me being made into some indistinguisable pulp to be fed to masses of peons. If it's anything they need it's something good. Like taking away someone's Big Mac meal and giving them something homemade and healthy. Not healthy in the sense of counting carbs or sugar or shit, healthy in the sense that you're eating a slice of fresh beef, rich in its own fat and blood and nutrients, instead of eating a disc of grey charcoal that with luck may not be ground asshole and elbows.

Burbank is a city of workers and nerds, I really have come to love it. It's Hollywood's Hollywood. There are a good amount of comic and collectible shops, and so every Wednesday we make it down to a very nice shop called House of Secrets (on Olive if you live in the area) where they give you good discounts on new comics of if they like you or if you have boobs. I get a boob discount. Anyways we also go there on Wednesday because we run into all sorts of people we know. Erik runs into his old Ben 10 crew, last week I ran into Tom Kenny whom I met at CN and we chatted, the week before that were some upperclassmen friends who now work on Simpsons, and this week was Mr. Stones again. Which was perfect timing because I was just picking up the new B.P.R.D. It's my new social scene.

Okay so, CSI borrowed the campus quad for a couple hours to film some scene with Grissom and another guy who wasn't a regular. I didn't really care, I'm a big William Petersen fan and I love the character Grissom. It was cool seeing the process, plus most of the campus either didn't know who he was or didn't care. Then there's me who watches CSI for hours straight (I am usually doing some work though). They covered our signs with 'Las Vegas University' banners and posed their extras doing things real college students would never do. Like sit in the middle of the lawn sharing magazines. Usually we are in our studios wishing they'd turn the lawns into more parking.
They brought in insane amounts of food for only like 2 hours and a Weinerschnitzel truck. The security guys were pushy and rude, the crewhands were nice as long as you were nice, and Mr. Petersen was nice too, despite his face in the pictures. I love that face.

I'm one of those people who doesn't mind taking trips and outings by themsleves. In fact, I enjoy it sometimes. I live about 15 mintues from Universal Citywalk (via two surface streets) and they just put in a LUSH Cosmetics there and I got hooked. I've been using their bath bars and bubble bars, Daddy-O purple shampoo, and by far my most favorite, the Buffy the Backslayer bar. It's amazing, I had horrible scaly elbows and such and this gave them a suckerpunch into next Tuesday. I don't even have to use any lotion anymore, it's so moisturizing. I picked up a small bottle of their Ambrosia shaving cream for Ray, (which can also be used on women) so I'm hoping to get others hooked.

Anyways, sidetracked. I parked in the Metro lot (it's free and illegal) and supposedly you can take a tram up to Citywalk but it had stopped, so I got to huff it up a 45 degree angled hill for about a mile. Which is the first time I have done that in maybe 3 years. I did it relatively quickly compared to others walking up but at the top thought my heart was going to explode. On my way up I passed four groups of weenie-looking gangbangers wearing ugly sweatshirts with prints of money signs and diamonds in bad colors. This type of print seems to be popular around here, I don't know why or were it came from but it's horrendous and hilarious. Also they were three sizes too big for whoever was wearing them. Citywalk is a funny place. You have tourists and locals hanging out in the same place, looking oddly at eachother.

If you're a fan of Hellboy or Mignola or even just horror/sci-fi stuff, catch Blood & Iron when you can. I TiVo'd it and got to finally watch it and it's really awesome. I liked Sword of Storms but I -loved- this. Vampires, tons of ghosts, Iron Maidens, real history mixed with fantasy, old gods, and arse-kicking. Oh and it's animated! Fun stuff.

I think now at 22 I'm set on retiring to become a foodie-traveler.

I've been spending my spring break in Fabulous Studio and I'm kind of sick of it. I'm taking tomorrow and Saturday off to go up to San Diego and see Erik and his cousin and see the Reganomics on St. Drunk's Day, so that's gonna be awesome.

Things I've gotten to do that aren't studio:

1. Visit the incredible Mr. Tad Stones at Film Roman and see awesome stuff for Hellboy: Blood and Iron and get some sort-of previews for the third animated Hellboy. My one professor Sue Kroyer (totally loveable and a little nuts but gee-golly if that doesn't just make her more fun) worked with him a while back and lit up when I mentioned his name and said he was the nicest man ever, which she does say about almost everyone, and of course it was totally true. He gave Erik and I a full hour of his time showing us around the studio and giving us extremely helpful advice. There's other cool stuff he does too, but one thing that he said on his blog (so I can too then) is that the third one is going to be just HB and Kate so you know it's going to be boss. I haven't seen Blood and Iron yet but I am going to TiVo that sucker because I know I'll love it.

2. See Kevin McDonald and Scott Thompson (seperately) do stand-up and one man shows. A little bit more of my life is complete. Scott did a bit that had me rolling and crying about a friend of his that is HIV positive, which somehow affects your farts and makes them smell like 'zombie farts'. Oh and he also picked on me but that's what you get when you sit directly in front of a ranting queen with a mic.

3. Watch Casino Royale yaaaaaay

4. Get cash for old action figures

5. Fix up my vintage Graflex flash casings to eventually make a custom lightsaber

Aaaah. I can relax for a night with no pants, oyster crackers, a glass of wine, and watch the marathon of No Reservations I taped a week ago. Of course I'm doing four loads of laundry, but whatever. Studio midterms are Wednesday so I am going to panic soon enough. I have to work tomorrow till midnight or later anyways.

I think I will cook a delicious lunch tomorrow and not measure any ingredients. My dad is intent on sending me to Tokyo if I obtain a certain GPA when I graduate.

Couple cool links I found:

Natalie Dee Comics are amazing.

Married to the Sea is co-written by her.

Peter Answers is creepy, when it works. (sometimes it's picky, so try back later) We askes it where the cat was an it specifically answered "By the fire on the denim couch".
This is going to be my Valentine's card. I rather like it. Does anyone know any good noise editing?

Erik and I keep watching Tourettes Guy and now I keep swearing like him. When I do swear. Which is roughly a couple times a day.
Instead of swapping drug store teddy bears and cheap candy, a bunch of us (read: singles and one guy whose girlfriend is away) have designated today as Nerd Day.

Nerd Day actually happens once or twice a month, when we paruse various comic shops and figure/toy stops. I am the only female (aside from Lauren who sometimes comes to harass us) to attend Nerd Day and I admit I occasionally break from the group to wander into a clothing store, but I rejoin later. Last 'official' Nerd Day I bought the original teaser poster for Casino Royale. (I had my own when I went to the Hellboy Animated DVD signing.) I like Nerd Day.

I wish I could find a nice copy of 300 under 50 bucks. I read it a long time ago and I need to refresh myself. Just so I can be a snob critic. But secondly, I love Miller's art. If I meet Frank Miller, and then Keifer, I could die without whining.

One of my studio friends keeps issues of Playboy in his desk. I love reading them and telling the guys that breast nipples are not in the direct center of the boob naturally. I admit I use the poses for sketching. They have some nice girls in there. I, however, do not like girls with skin-colored vanishing nipples.

Some bitch in my hall is screaming. Not "help" screaming. Just "ohmigoditsyounakid" screaming.

Oh man oh man oh man...Today I got to meet Doug Jones (who is the nicest, sweetest guy ever) and Mike Mignola again. It was in a hole-in-the-wall store called Dark Delicacies so there was only 40 people there, unlike a comic-con lineup. So people were nice and took their time and Mignola drew and signed stuff for people without complaint. I got my Drew Struzan Hellboy poster signed, a Painkiller Jane/Hellboy poster signed, and the animated DVD signed. I got a picture of a hug with Doug (I know that rhymes) and apparently I now own the only Mignola-signed Hellboy plush in exsistance. Wheeeeee! Mr. Jones signed my H poster to "My Precious Ari", because I just broke down and told him I loved him. Which I do. But he was so considerate to everyone, and you could just watch his acting just in his reactions to what people said to him. I wish I could move like he does. Can't wait to see the new Fantastic Four. Not because I liked the movie, but because he's the Silver Surfer. Which is awesome + awesome.

I got interviewed for some Doug Jones documentary for some DVD feature, maybe Pan's Labrynth, so if you watch your DVD extras, don't be surprised to see me. Nerds love a comic-loving, perky, vaccant blonde.

Then I ordered pizza and did homework.

I love Mom, I'm going to miss her.

Until now, I have been able to figure out a TiVo schedule that will let me record Anthony Bourdain and 24 at the same time. Yay! Meanwhile, I have to do over 100 tiny-text pages of reading for this women's European history course a week, and my term paper is due in 2 weeks. Wow, at least I can walk with just 3 credits. If I do this right. I am, on a sidenote, sort of glad to learn about women's history at this time of my life. On the other hand, listening to dumb women bitching is starting to get to me. They follow the rule "if you can't sing good, sing loud" theory, and that starts to get annoying. Feminism for someone who was raised as an anti-feminist is somewhat interesting.

At last this weekend is composed of Hollywood-style partying, as a result of me delaying my birthday weekend. Maybe I'll meet someone nice. But most likely not due to my fear of club men. And men in general.

All I wanted for my birthday, literally, was one phonecall from one person. And it didn't happen. A part of me knew it wouldn't happen but most of me wished it would. I spent the whole day hoping and waiting for it. And the day ended, and I was left staring at my phone. And that was my final straw. I am not going to take any more of this crap because why should I, I am getting nothing but pain in return.
Plus the day was kind of a bust, because no one likes Thursdays. But I did see my parents. And I got shrimp from Outback. And from Lauren and Jose, a cool cheap mexican Spider-man piniata.
